      Welcome to this month’s free tutorials!

      Please read our tips below to score an A* on the English as a First Language exam.

      Candidates producing A* answers demonstrated that they had understood a fairly wide range of relevant ideas, communicating these accurately and concisely.

      Therefore, you must aim for quality rather than quantity. This means you should focus more on writing excellent English than a long essay.

      Check how many marks there are for each question. It will help you plan your time in the examination and target the requirements of each question more effectively. For example, a question with six marks expects you to offer more than a question with only one mark.

      Avoid using the same word too often and try to choose a more precise vocabulary rather than always the first word you think of.

      Try to avoid common, overused, vague, short and childish vocabulary, such as ‘nice’, ‘big’, ‘little’, ‘a lot of’, ‘good’, and ‘bad’.

      The key here is to build your vocabulary. Here are some ways how to build your vocabulary.

      1. Look for synonyms for each basic word that you come across.

      2. Make a habit of keeping a logbook beside you, or using your smartphone if you have one, and start building your vocabulary by looking into a dictionary (or dictionary from your super smartphone) and then copying down their synonym words or phrases.

      3. You can start by building verbs, as they are very interesting, and you even get to learn phrasal verbs at the same time. Using phrasal verbs in your writing could land you some good marks!

      Thank you for joining our free English lesson and Q&A session!

      Here are some tips on how to develop ideas from the passage:

      1. Watch out for hints and suggestions in the text, such as how characters might feel or their reasons for behaving as they did.

      2. Use the evidence you have found by reading the insert – do not invent completely new ideas or information that could not be backed up with details or clues from the text.

      3. Some ideas might be quite subtle and implied. This means that you will need to use any clues and details you noticed when reading to write a convincing response.

      4. It will not be enough just to repeat the details you have read. The more you can adapt the details from the passage to suit the task you have been set, the more likely you are to score well for reading.

      5. Do not drift away from the text. Everything you write must be directly connected to the passage and be supported by references to it.
