1. Understand the objectives of the test for each paper

  • Each paper covers several topics or subjects. Discover what you’re tested on within each one.
  • Usually, students demonstrate their understanding of the topic and apply what they’ve learned to find solutions.

For example under paper 1:

For the topic of “Observe need/requirement,” students identify and describe needs and opportunities for design and technological improvement.

2. Get the right syllabus

Syllabus explains all the details of each topic and objectives that students must achieve under each topic.

Download the latest and the right syllabus for your examination year. You may use it as a reference.

3. Identify the questions

Make a habit to identify the question that you usually can’t get it right when you’re doing the past exam papers. Thereafter:

  • drill deeper on that specific topic.
  • observe how this kind of question being asked in the exam, and what are the objectives of the test.
  • you can always get some advice from your teacher at school (don’t be afraid to ask).

  1. Hi I just did my IGCSE DT paper 1. I am taking resistant materials but I answered question 3. Was I supposed to answer question 1? I didn’t know until after. I answered the question like how I would answer a resistant materials question. Assuming I would get 100% if it was a resistant materials questions, could that still mean I would get 0? I’m really upset because I’ve worked really hard and did really well on my coursework.

    1. Although it might be easier to solve a question related to your specialist option (resistant materials in your case), it is completely acceptable to choose other questions. Go through your dt syllabus once, it says you can choose any question irrespective of the chosen/studied section
