Advanced Level (A-Level) is the second part of GCE (General Certificate of Education) (the first part of GCE is O-Level (Ordinary Level)). It is being studied by students of Year 12 & 13 (or sixth form) from the age group 16-18 (in certain countries are age group 17-19).
A-Level is a 2-year course, and it is recognized as the standard assessment of a student’s suitability to enter universities’ courses. According to the British Council, A-levels are similar to the American Advanced Placements which are themselves equivalent to first year courses of America’s four year bachelor degrees.
Structure and Curriculums
At least 5 A*-C grades from GCSE or O-Level, including English and Mathematics are needed as a qualification to start A-Level.
A-Level is being offered by school’s sixth form, private colleges, and universities (normally it’s called Foundation Course in universities). Students may choose to take four to six subjects in A-Level, from the sciences categories (Advanced Maths, Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc) or arts categories (Business Studies, Economics, Accounting, Arts, Music, Sociology etc).
Recognition
A-Level is a qualification offered by education institutions in the UK. It is widely taken by students in Commonwealth and former Commonwealth countries.
A-Level course is considered very rigorous, and its certification is highly excepted by universities worldwide. Students normally will apply a placement in preferred universities prior to A-Level exams, with their predicted A-Level results from schools.
As the predicted A-Level results are graded by students’ teachers (which normally considered unreliable), universities still insisted an actual A-Level results before the final decision of placement, though students might be granted a place in the university earlier.

Can I take economics advanced level without economics igcse edexcel
Hi Arnob,
It is not required by Pearson. But taking Economics at iGCSE level will prepare you for the required knowledge for A Level.
We hope this helps. Thank you.
I need to register for edexcel accounting and business studies advanced subsidiary but I did not take maths igcse but I have completed other 5 igcse subjects including accounting and business studies so will British council and Pearson let me register for advanced subsidiary and accept my registration for advanced level accounting and business studies or it is against the rules of Pearson and British council because I did not taken maths igcse
Hi Arnob,
It’s not against Pearson’s rules to not take Maths. However, without taking Maths, it will limit your opportunity to enrol into a wider range of courses in the university later.
Furthermore, we learned from your earlier comments that you received a grade of E at iGCSE Accounting. We strongly suggest that you check with your exam centre if they have grade requirements for A Level.
We hope this helps. Thank you.
I need to register for Advanced subsidiary edexcel accounting and business studies and I am prepared for it but few days ago I received igcse grades of accounting edexcel maths the grades were very poor and retake is highly recommended so can I retake igcse accounting and maths after completing advanced level accounting and business studies will Pearson and British council accept this and let me register for edexcel advanced subsidiary or it is against the rules
Hi Arnob,
We believe that they will accept your A Level registration for Business Studies. However, please check with your exam centre if they have a grade requirement for A Level Accounting.
Thank you.
I have completed edexcel igcse 5 subjects but I have received poor marks in accounting and maths in igcse and retake is highly suggested but I have completed business studies and accounting in advanced level so if i retake igcse accounting and maths will I have to start over all again from igcse to advanced level , i mean igcse 3 subjects again and advanced level accounting and business studies again
Hi Arnob,
We strongly suggest that you ask the university you wish to apply to and confirm with them if you need to retake these subjects at iGCSE and A Level. In this way, you would have 100% assurance that you have fulfilled the university requirements.
Thank you.
I have taken igcse 3 subjects as a private candidate but now I will have to register other remaining 3 subjects as a school candidate because of covid situation the private candidate service is off but school service is on is it OK and justified
Hi Arnob,
Thank you for writing in.
There will be no problem if you will register with another exam centre. In your case, you will be registering as a schooled candidate and not as a private candidate.
You only need to provide your Unique Candidate Identifier (UCI) number when you register since you have taken a Pearson exam previously.
We hope this helps.
Which edexcel maths A igcse is easy 4MA1 or 4MA1R and will you provide me igcse maths a free course because I got 2 months left for exam
Hi Arnob,
Both 4MA1 and 4MA1R follow the same syllabus. The R means “Regional” and is used for iGCSE exams in regions where the timezones differ too much to have the exams simultaneously as the other countries.

Is it OK to re take accounting igcse after completing advanced level accounting or I will have to take accounting advanced level again because I had retake accounting igcse after completing advanced level accounting in edexcel
Hi Arnob,
We suggest that you contact your chosen university and ask them if they will accept your IGCSE certificates and if you need to retake your A Level exams. In this way, you would have 100% assurance that you have followed their requirements.
Thank you.
I have completed edexcel advanced level accounting but i need to retake accounting igcse because i had received poor marks in
accounting igcse Will Pearson edexcel and British council accept it and accept my registration
Hello Arnob,
We believe that they will accept your registration. But the important thing you must consider is your university application. Some universities will not accept 13 months apart between the first exam and the last exam.
For example, if you have taken your iGCSE last June 2020, it has been more than 13 months from the first time you sat. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you check the university’s requirement.
We hope this helps. Thank you.
I have completed advanced level accounting edexcel but I need to retake accounting igcse as I had E grade in accounting igcse but will I have to take advanced level accounting again as I had completed retake accounting igcse
Hello Arnob,
Please check with your preferred universities regarding the combining results from separate examination series. Some universities would only accept exam results within a certain period, for example: within 13 months or 24 months between the first exam and the last exam.
Thank you.
I want to retake accounting igcse I have completed advanced level accounting and business studies because I got poor marks in accounting igcse (E) .so can I register for accounting igcse
