    (With reference to Paper 33, October/November, 2011, Question 3dii)
    Kindly explain to me why we cannot consider oxidizing/reducing agents, and instead have to consider bases/acids as per the marking scheme.

    2. Hi there,

      Reducing/oxidizing agents are present in redox reactions. There are two easy ways to establish whether oxidation/reducing processes took place in a chemical reaction:
      – a gain of oxygen (oxidation) by an element and loss of oxygen (reduction)
      – electron transfer and changes in oxidation number are present

      In the reaction presented between phosphate ion and sulfuric acid, none of the reagents gains/loses oxygen. Therefore, it is NOT a redox reaction and the reagents cannot be classified into reducing/oxidizing agents.

      According to the Brønsted–Lowry theory of acids and bases, a BASE is a PROTON ACCEPTOR. In the case of Question 3dii, the phosphate ion ACCEPTS two PROTONS leading to a dihydrogen phosphate ion.
