My son achieved a Grade A in his AL exam!
“My son, an international student from Hong Kong, used their resources two years ago and successfully passed his English IGCSE. Is 8021 only for AS level or is it a two-year course( AS and A level)?
Hi there,
English General Paper (8021) is only available in AS Level.
Hi!
I just entered AS level and our school is giving us an option from these three English syllabuses 8021,9093, and 8693, but I don’t know which one to choose so I was wondering if you could help by giving an intro and differences with these three for me to decide which one suits me best.
Thank you so much for creating this website.
Hello there,
Here are short descriptions of each subject:
1. English General Paper (AS Level only) (8021) – It encourages learners to engage with a variety of topics, including knowledge and understanding gained from study of other subjects. They learn to become confident in analysing knowledge and opinion from a variety of sources, to build arguments and to communicate through written English. It enables learners to develop these skills which are of great use for further study and employment.
2. English Language (9093) – Learners will be encouraged to respond critically to a wide variety of texts in a range of forms, styles and contexts, and to promote skills of communication, reading, research and analysis. Through their study, learners will develop an ability to read and analyse material, gaining further knowledge and understanding of English language features and issues. Learners will also develop the skills of writing clearly, accurately, creatively and effectively for different purposes and audiences.
3. There is no AS Level subject that has a subject code of 8693. But if you meant, English – Language and Literature (AS Level only) 8695. It aims to encourage an appreciation of literature in English – prose, poetry and drama – of different types and from different cultures; and to develop the key skills required to read, analyse and communicate effectively in English. By studying a range of texts, learners understand more about writers’ choices of language, form and structure, and develop their ability to form independent opinions about what they read. Learners also improve their understanding of the English language and how it is used, extending their skills across a range of writing styles, including imaginative, discursive and argumentative.
We strongly suggest that you download the subject syllabus here: https://www.skolatis.com/cambridge-international-as-a-level-syllabuses/ and make a comparison.
We hope this helps.
Ok, thank you so much this was super useful but I would like to confirm that if the language which is 9093 is the only syllabus for both AS and A level.
Thank you so much this was extremely helpful but I would just like to clarify if 9093 is the only English subject where I can do both in AS and A level.
Hello there,
With English Language (9093), you may continue it until A Level.
Hi by when will the english general paper (8021) feb March 2020 be uploaded?
Thankyou
Hi Emily,
We’re still missing the Feb-March papers of English General Paper (8021). We will upload it once we get a hold of it. Please kindly check our page from time to time.
I am planning on doing a Computer Science Degree after my A-Levels. I would like to know whether Computer Science is needed to do such a degree or if Information Technology enough. Also, I would like to know what the main difference is between them.
Thank You!
Hello Clancy,
We strongly suggest that you get in touch with your preferred college/university regarding their subject entry requirements for Computer Science degree. In this way, you would have 100% assurance that you have chosen the right subjects for your future studies.
As to your second question, Computer Science focuses on fundamental principles of computer science and how computer programs work in a range of contexts. It encourages learners to think creatively, through applying practical programming solutions, demonstrating that they are effective uses of technology. On the other hand, Information Technology is studying the structure and use of IT systems within a wide range of organisations, including the use of a variety of computer networks. As a result, learners gain an understanding of IT system life cycles, and how these affect the workplace. To get a better understanding of these two subjects, we encourage you to download the subject syllabus here: https://www.skolatis.com/cambridge-international-as-a-level-syllabuses/
We hope this helps.
Thank you, this helps alot!
Hi Clancy,
You are very much welcome.
Hello team IGCSE centre,
Thank you for Feb March papers.
Now when are May June 2020 papers coming out.
Hello Ariel,
You are very much welcome.
Hy guys, do you have tips A Level Literature 9695?- Tips on exam technique etc..
And Divinity 9011?- I dont know how to revise Divinity
Hi Ariel,
We always suggest our candidates to start by understanding what is expected of them by downloading the subject syllabus (https://www.skolatis.com/cambridge-international-as-a-level-syllabuses/) and learn the key concepts and ideas.
Then start your revision by practicing with past papers. Pay attention to the most common mistakes you always seem to make. Make notes and revise them, so you can avoid making the same mistakes in your actual exam.
We also suggest that you go through Examiners’ Notes (https://www.skolatis.com/as-a-level-past-exam-papers/). You can study what are the needed points to gain marks and learn the common mistakes candidates made during the exam.
Dear IGCSE Centre,
I have taken Accounting, Economics, Business, Language and Literature in English and Mathematics for my AS and A Levels. School has halted virtual learning sessions till June and i want to get a headstart again. I found a copy of the IGCSE Accounting Textbook.
Is Accounting more of a practical or more of a theoretical subject?
Can I use the IGCSE Accounting textbook for AS Level for the time being?
Thanks
Hello Druv,
With Accounting, you need to learn and understand the key concepts and formulas first. The Accounting textbook can help you with this. Once you familiarise/memorise the key equations/formulas, then you can start practicing with past exam papers.
Try solving a problem with the formula without looking it up. You MUST do this as many times as you can. You will be able to remember the formulas/key equations better when you repeat this step.
Furthermore, you must develop greater analytical skills and learn to extract information from scenarios to make your answers relevant.
Hi I am going to join AS and A level soon and I was wondering which papers are we supposed to do in AS level and which paper to do in A level for biology and chemistry. Another doubt was how do you think I should prepare to start learning for the first time.
Hello there,
Please kindly download the subject syllabus here: https://www.skolatis.com/cambridge-international-as-a-level-syllabuses/ to know the required paper components for AS Level and A Level.
We suggest that you start as early as possible. Revise the subject from the beginning. Go through the syllabus and highlight the important facts that you think could be on the test and list down things you are confident and not so sure about.
Practice with the latest past exam papers and continue with the older ones dated back from 5 to 10 years. Make notes on the common mistakes you always seem to make. Read and annotate your textbook for the questions you got wrong.
For topics or practices that you need help, you might want to consider our #AskTheExaminer programme. For a monthly fee, you can send in your questions and our helpful and friendly examiners will provide you explanation and step-by-step solution.
